The four concessions
Four sentences that cover every argument on this site, each with the sentence that turns it. What to concede, when, and the one thing you never concede.

The short version
- Four concessions cover every argument on this site. Learn the four and you can stop carrying sixteen.
- Never say a concession without the sentence that turns it. On its own it is a gift to the other side.
- The toll is the one you make first, unprompted, in every room. The antisemitism charge is the one you almost never make unprompted.
- Political disavowal is not on the list and never will be. You do not have to denounce a government to earn a hearing.
What you need1 item
- One person willing to hear you say eight sentences out loud, or the voice recorder on your phone
Five entries on this site each tell you to concede something different, and one asks for three separate admissions inside fifteen seconds. Work through them all and you end up carrying the wrong one into the wrong room. A half-remembered concession sounds exactly like agreeing with the whole charge.
Four sentences replace the lot.
You are not obliged to have any of these arguments. If you are in one, these four cover it.
The rule that makes them work. A concession left sitting there reads as a retreat. One that becomes the blade in the next sentence buys you the standing to be believed on everything after it. So each is a pair, and you never say the first half without the second.
1. The toll
The health ministry’s named list runs to 72,835 people, to 7 May 2026. The list doesn’t say which were fighters, and I’m not arguing about the number.
No total decides this. The law asks, strike by strike, whether the expected harm was excessive against the advantage anticipated. Which strike do you mean?
Make this one in every room, unprompted, inside your first thirty seconds.
It is the only one you offer before anybody asks. Reach for a statistic before you have said it in plain language and you sound like somebody doing arithmetic on children.
Do not try to subtract fighters from the total. That argument has an answer ready. It is set out in the death toll and genocide.
2. The two legal systems
I’m not going to tell you there’s one legal system in the West Bank. There are two, they’re allocated by nationality, and they’ve run for nearly sixty years.
Occupation and apartheid have different tests. Apartheid needs a regime of racial domination held in place on purpose. Say which you’re charging, then say what replaces it.
Make this one in a briefed room: a union branch, a council, a panel, a students’ union.
Denial there does not survive one follow-up: Israeli legal organisations document the gap themselves. Put both halves in one breath, or the first gets clipped as agreement.
Do not volunteer it when the subject is Gaza. It answers a question nobody asked. The argument is in apartheid.
3. The Jewish anti-Zionists
Jews have opposed Zionism since it began. The Bund on socialist grounds, Satmar on religious ones. Hatred of Jews doesn’t explain people who were Jews.
Every one of those was an argument among Jews about how Jews would be safe. None said this people alone gives up what everyone else has. Which am I hearing?
Make this one early, with a colleague or in any progressive room, before they produce it.
The person who says it first is visibly the one not frightened of it. It is also the fastest way to end an argument about somebody’s Jewish friend. See anti-Zionism.
4. The bad-faith charge
It does get raised in bad faith sometimes. The man who drafted the IHRA definition says so himself. Tell me your case: the date, the measure, the person.
A real misuse has a case attached. What you’ve given me is a claim about why I said it, and that sentence works just as well for a Klansman.
Almost never unprompted, and never on its own.
In a room that has just been told the IHRA definition is a censorship tool, this concession by itself is heard as agreeing with the premise. You will have paid for nothing.
So the demand travels inside it. Concede the misuse and ask for the case in the same breath, with no pause between them.
Make it to somebody who has been through a process they could not answer. Ask what happened to them first. See silencing criticism.
What is not on the list
Political disavowal, now or ever.
Nobody has to denounce a government they did not elect to be heard, and this site carries an entry arguing that demanding exactly that of a Jew is discriminatory. We are not running that test on our own readers.
Saying that a particular sentence was indefensible is a different thing. Two Israeli ministers told two million people they would have no food and no water. If that gets read out at you, say it is indefensible, because it is. Honesty about a sentence is not a loyalty oath about a government.
Three other real concessions stay in their own entries, because they only arrive with their subject: the displacement of 1948, the Holocaust and the 1947 vote, and the fact that people are entitled to care selectively. Learn those the week you need them.
If you concede all four and stop
Then you lose.
You lose more sadly than the person who denied everything, because you were the one being straight. Four concessions in a row with no blade is not honesty. It is a confession, and a room hears it as one.
The concession is not an entry fee. It buys the right to make the demand in the next sentence, and if you cannot remember the demand, do not make the concession.
I’m not the person to argue that one tonight.
That costs almost nothing. Conceding half an argument costs the lot.
Ten minutes, then a week
Fill in the blanks92 words
Say all eight sentences out loud once, in pairs, in order. One sitting, ten minutes. A week later say the four pairs from memory and check them against the entries. What you get wrong the second time is what you would have got wrong in a room.
If I make one of the four and hear myself stop, then I will say the second half before anybody answers.
And if the second half will not come, then I will say I am not the person to argue that one tonight, and stop.

The arguments this page assumes, and where it sits in the track- 01The argumentIsrael is committing genocide in GazaIn October 2025 Israel released 250 prisoners serving life sentences in exchange for twenty living hostages. Genocide is a claim about intent, and a state intent on destroying a people does not pay that to stop.
- 02The argumentThe death toll proves Israel is killing civilians indiscriminatelyHuman Rights Watch collected 184 Israeli evacuation orders for Gaza, sent by leaflet, text and drone loudspeaker between October 2023 and August 2024. The count is the prosecution's own. An army killing indiscriminately does not announce where it is going.
- 03The argumentIsrael is an apartheid stateSalim Joubran, an Arab justice of Israel's Supreme Court, chaired the committee that supervised Israel's national elections from 2013 to 2015. Apartheid was a system for keeping the ballot box away from a man like him, not for putting him in charge of it.
- 04The argumentAnti-Zionism isn't antisemitism. Zionism is a political ideology like any other, and opposing it is normal politics. The UN General Assembly declared Zionism a form of racism in 1975 and revoked the resolution in 1991. The position outlived the vote that killed it, because it was never a claim about how Israel behaves. It is a claim about which people get a country.
- 05The argumentCalling it antisemitism is just a way of shutting down criticism of IsraelIn October 2020 the Equality and Human Rights Commission ruled that the Labour Party had unlawfully harassed Jews. Among the conduct it named was the claim that antisemitism complaints were smears. You have just made that claim.
