The claim you are answering
Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East, the only Jewish state, the only country in the region with a pride parade, and the only place Jews can go when it happens again.
This page answers it below. A line you can say, the facts under it, and the sources, so you can cite them rather than assert them.
The short answer. Say this
Pew found Israel the only country on earth where Jews are more than two per cent of the population. On 14 December 2025 seven of its justices unanimously overturned the government's sacking of the attorney general, and the prime minister complied.
If you say nothing else, say one of these
On the claim: Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East, the only Jewish state, the only country in the region with a pride parade, and the only place Jews can go when it happens again.

Freedom House 2026 rates Israel 73 out of 100, status Free, against Tunisia on 42. It scores the West Bank 22 and Gaza 2 separately.
Freedom House says Israel's score excludes what its army and settlers do in the territories. That is the claim you're making: the constitutional order inside the line. The occupation is a different argument.

The Human Dignity Trust lists 19 Middle East and North Africa jurisdictions that criminalise consensual same-sex intimacy. Israel is not on the map.
In Iran, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and the UAE the death penalty is imposed or available. A fact about statute books, not attitudes, so it cannot be answered with a counter-anecdote about Tel Aviv.

In 1938 delegates from 32 countries met at Evian on Jewish refugees from Germany. Other than the Dominican Republic, none would take more.
The St Louis sailed the next May with 937 passengers and was turned away by Cuba and the United States. It turns the Law of Return from a sentiment into an answer to a documented problem.

Nobody has to authorise you to make these claims. They are the most repeated lines our side has. That is the problem. Anybody who argues about Israel monthly has heard all five, and has a prepared answer ready for two.
The warning goes before the list, because the list is where people get hurt. Two of these are unarguable. Two hold only in a precise form and fall apart in the loose one. Delivered as a run of superlatives, all of them sound like a brochure.
How to use these
Pick one. State it precisely. Name where it comes from. Then stop.
The failure mode looks like this. Somebody lists five things Israel is the only country to do, at speed. The room hears advertising rather than argument. Meanwhile the opponent picks the weakest of the five, takes it apart, and the other four go down with it.
One claim with a source beats five asserted.
Where this backfires. A superlative invites a competition. The moment you say “only”, you have volunteered to defend a comparison against every counter-example on earth. You have moved the argument from what Israel is to how Israel ranks. Where the claim is about a right, say the right instead.
The two that need no defending
Israel is the only state with a Jewish majority. Not the best, not the first. The only one, and there is no second anywhere.
Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics counted 10.178 million residents at the start of 2026. Of those, 7.771 million sit in its category of Jews and others, 76.3 per cent. Arab citizens number 2.147 million, 21.1 per cent. Pew’s global survey found something starker. Israel is the only country in the world where Jews are more than 2 per cent of the population. There are roughly 15 million Jews alive, 0.2 per cent of humanity.
Israel is the only place Jews exercise national self-determination. This is the stronger of the two, and stronger than anything else on this page. It does not depend on a ranking, an index or a comparison with a neighbour.
The argument for it, and the objection to it, are in the entry on why Israel exists. What matters here is the form. It is a claim about a right that dozens of peoples exercised in one century, not about being better than anybody.
The democracy claim, in the version that holds
Stop saying “the only democracy in the Middle East”. It is the line a briefed opponent most wants to hear, because two answers are waiting and both land.
Here is what is measurable, and it is a great deal.
Before you use that index, know what else is in it. The same edition rates the West Bank 22 out of 100 and Gaza 2, in separate country reports, both Not Free. Freedom House says so in the Israel report itself. Israel’s score does not reflect the actions of its military or its settlers in the territories, because those are assessed elsewhere. Anybody sent to look the number up finds all three. So give all three yourself, in the same breath, or do not give the number at all.
Freedom House rates Israel 73 out of 100 in Freedom in the World 2026, status Free. No other country in the region is close. Tunisia scores 42, Lebanon 41, Morocco 37, Jordan 34, Turkey 32, Iraq 31, Egypt 18 and Saudi Arabia 9. Its political rights score is 34 out of 40, and Freedom House records free and fair elections with electoral laws applied impartially.
What the 73 measures is the constitutional order inside the Green Line, which is the only thing this claim asserts. The 22 and the 2 are the argument about the occupation and about who governs Gaza, and that argument is a different one. Say which you are having.
Power changes hands and the losers leave. In June 2021 a coalition led by Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid ended twelve continuous years of Benjamin Netanyahu as prime minister. The Knesset vote was sixty to fifty-nine. In December 2022 Netanyahu won an election and returned. Nobody was arrested either time.
The courts rule against the government and the rulings stand. On 1 January 2024 the Supreme Court struck down the reasonableness amendment by eight to seven. It was the first time it had annulled a Basic Law. On 14 December 2025 seven justices unanimously annulled the government’s dismissal of the attorney general. The court’s president wrote that the rule of law “does not exclude anyone, including state authorities and organizations”. That happened under the most right-wing government in the country’s history, and it held.
Arab citizens vote, sit in the Knesset and sit on the Supreme Court. Arab parties held ten seats after the 2022 election, and one joined a governing coalition in 2021. The detail, and the discrimination alongside it, are in the entry on apartheid.
Now the two answers coming at you.
“Other countries in the region hold elections.” They do, and you gain nothing by pretending otherwise. The reply is not that voting happens. It is who gets on the ballot and what happens to the winner.
In Iran the Guardian Council, which nobody elects, vets every candidate for parliament and the presidency. It disqualifies whoever it judges insufficiently loyal. Freedom House scores Iran 10 out of 100. Tunisia genuinely was the region’s democratic success. Kais Saied dismissed the legislature in 2021 and was re-elected after the electoral commission disqualified most of his opponents. Elections are not the test. Contestability is.
“A state governing millions of people who cannot vote for it is not a democracy.” This is the serious one, and evasion is visible from the back of the room.
Do not claim the West Bank is democratic, because it is not. The argument about its status belongs in the entry on apartheid. What you can say, and defend, is narrower. The constitutional order inside Israel is democratic on every measure anybody uses. The West Bank has been under military administration pending a settlement that has not happened. A state was offered more than once and refused, which is the entry on the offers. Concede the tension. Do not concede the state.
The sentence that survives. Drop the ranking and name the institutions. Contested elections. Governments that lose them and go. A court that overrules the prime minister. An Arab minority that votes and judges. None of those four can be answered with a counter-score, because none of them is a score.
Keep the index in reserve, and if you use it, say all three numbers.
The LGBT claim, in the version that holds
Do not imply Israel has same-sex marriage. Israel has no civil marriage at all, for anybody, which secular Israelis complain about as loudly as gay ones. Marriages contracted abroad have been registered since 2006. An advocate who blurs that gets corrected, and loses the stronger claim underneath.
The strong claim is about criminal law.
The Human Dignity Trust counts 66 jurisdictions worldwide that criminalise consensual same-sex intimacy. Nineteen are in the Middle East and North Africa, including the Palestinian territories. In Iran, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and the UAE the death penalty is imposed or available. Israel is not on that map.
It decriminalised in 1988 and prohibited employment discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation in 1992. Military service opened in 1993 and joint adoption in 2008. From 11 January 2022 surrogacy opened to same-sex couples and single men, after a petition first filed in 2010. Tel Aviv Pride has drawn crowds above 200,000.
Say the limits before somebody else does. Jerusalem Pride was attacked in 2015 and Shira Banki, aged sixteen, was murdered. Religious parties in government oppose most of this. The record is a fight, not a gift.
“That’s pinkwashing”
Learn this word before you walk into it. Sarah Schulman put it in the New York Times in November 2011. She defined it as a deliberate strategy: hiding the treatment of Palestinians behind an image of modernity.
Three replies, and the first is the one that works.
The rights predate the accusation by decades. Decriminalisation in 1988, employment protection in 1992, open military service in 1993. Most of it was won by Israeli citizens suing their own government in their own courts, over years. A public relations department does not produce a twelve-year surrogacy case.
The argument concedes the fact. Pinkwashing does not dispute that gay life in Israel is safer than anywhere near it. It disputes the motive. Say that out loud.
And it cannot be falsified, which is worth naming. Under this rule a good record becomes evidence of bad faith, and no other country is treated that way. Concede the honest part, because there is one. Israeli tourism marketing has used gay Tel Aviv, and that marketing is real. Marketing being real does not make the statute book fake.
Refuge
The Law of Return passed on 5 July 1950. Section 1 is one line: “Every Jew has the right to come to this country as an oleh.” The 1970 amendment extended it to children, grandchildren and spouses.
Read that against what it answers. In July 1938 delegates from 32 countries met at Evian to discuss Jewish refugees from Germany. Other than the Dominican Republic, none would take more. The St Louis sailed from Hamburg on 13 May 1939 with 937 passengers. Cuba and the United States turned it away. Of those who went back to Europe, 254 were murdered in the Holocaust.
That is what the claim means. Not that Israel is a pleasant place to live. That there is now a door with no committee behind it.
Retire these
Say the version on the right.
“The only democracy in the Middle East” becomes the institutions: contested elections, governments that lose them and go, a court that overrules the prime minister, an Arab minority that votes and judges. If you reach for the Freedom House score instead, carry the West Bank’s 22 and Gaza’s 2 with it.
“Israel has gay marriage” becomes “in nineteen jurisdictions in that region being gay is a crime, in four of them you can be executed, and Israel is not one of them”.
“The only free country in the Middle East” becomes the named institutions, because “free” invites an argument about Gaza and the institutions do not.
“Jews have nowhere else to go” becomes “Jews now have somewhere to go that depends on nobody’s committee”. The first sounds like despair. The second is a fact about a statute.
And retire the list itself. Five superlatives in one breath is the commonest way this material fails.
The lines
“It’s the only state on earth with a Jewish majority. There is no second one. That’s the whole claim.”
“Freedom House rates Israel 73 and calls it Free. Tunisia is next on 42. The same people score the West Bank 22 and Gaza 2, and I’ll give you those, but that’s the argument about the occupation and not about the Knesset.”
“Their supreme court overruled the prime minister in December and he complied. Name me the neighbour where that happens.”
“I’m not telling you Israel has gay marriage, it doesn’t. I’m telling you it’s a crime in nineteen jurisdictions round it and four of them will execute you.”
“You’re not arguing the law is different. You’re arguing about why I brought it up.”
Two lines, with a real day in them
Write two lines with a real day in them.
Action. “Before Thursday’s meeting I will pick one claim off this page, learn the number and the source that go with it, and use that one only.”
Coping. “If somebody answers with Tunisia or Lebanon, I will give the Freedom House scores, 73 against 42 and 41, and say the West Bank’s 22 and Gaza’s 2 myself before they can.”
