The claim you are answering
There is no real debate inside Israel. Israelis all back whatever their government does
This page answers it below. A line you can say, the facts under it, and the sources, so you can cite them rather than assert them.
The short answer. Say this
In June 2004 Israel's Supreme Court heard a Palestinian village council and voided the barrier's route along thirty of the forty kilometres in dispute. Everything you know about Israeli wrongdoing you learned from Israelis, in Israel, under their own names.
If you say nothing else, say one of these
On the claim: There is no real debate inside Israel. Israelis all back whatever their government does
- 01
In July 2023 the reservist group Brothers in Arms announced that roughly 10,000 volunteer reservists would stop turning up.
More than 1,100 were air force, 904 from military intelligence. Soldiers withdrawing unpaid service to pressure their own elected government. No equivalent anywhere in the region.

In January 2024 Israel's Supreme Court sat with all fifteen justices for the first time and struck down the government's flagship law. The government complied.
Eight to seven. Protest shows people are angry. Obeying the ruling shows the machinery works. That is the whole argument in one sentence.

Nearly every report of Israeli wrongdoing in circulation came from an Israeli organisation: ACRI since 1972, B'Tselem since 1989, Breaking the Silence since 2004.
Yesh Din since 2005, all registered in Israel. Ask where the other side gets its material. The answer is Israelis, publishing at home, under their own names.

The fuller answer
This entry asks nothing of your politics. Every fact on it works whether you support the current Israeli government, oppose it, or hold no view at all. It is evidence about a country, not a position on its coalition.
Do not read the list out. Set the test.
The temptation is to recite achievements and hope the room warms up. That reads as a brochure, and a brochure loses.
Make it a test the other person has to answer instead. Ask them to describe what a closed, uniform, unarguing society looks like. Then hand over the record.
“A country where nobody argues doesn’t run 39 straight weekends of protest against its own prime minister. Which of the two are you describing?”
There is a second half, and it is the part that lands. Nearly everything the other person knows about Israeli wrongdoing came out of Israel, published by Israelis, in Hebrew, under their own names.
2023, when Israelis shut their own country down
In January 2023 the government moved a package of changes to the courts. Israelis went into the street and stayed there.
The central demonstration was on Kaplan Street in Tel Aviv, every Saturday night. The Times of Israel was still covering it as the 39th consecutive week at the end of September.
Give the crowd figures with the caveat attached, because the caveat is what makes you credible. On 11 March 2023 organisers claimed half a million nationwide. Media and police estimates that night ran above 300,000. Use the lower number and you cannot be knocked off it.
Then the part with no equivalent anywhere in the region.
On 22 July 2023 the reservist group Brothers in Arms held a press conference in Herzliya. Roughly 10,000 volunteer reservists announced they would stop turning up. The letters included more than 1,100 air force reservists, over 400 of them pilots, and 904 from military intelligence.
These were not conscripts dodging service. They were people who give years of unpaid time, withdrawing it to pressure an elected government.
Then the court, and the court is the argument
Protest shows that people are angry. What happens next shows whether the machinery works.
On 1 January 2024 the Supreme Court sat with all fifteen justices for the first time in Israel’s history. By eight to seven it struck down the amendment to Basic Law: The Judiciary passed the previous July. Thirteen of the fifteen held that the court had authority to review a Basic Law at all.
The minister who wrote the reform condemned the ruling in public. The government did not defy it. The reasonableness standard stayed struck down and the wider package went no further.
“Their supreme court cancelled the government’s flagship law in the middle of a war, and the government obeyed it. Name the other countries in that region where that happens.”
The hostage families, aimed at their own government
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum formed within days of 7 October 2023. Its pressure has been directed inward, at the Israeli government, rather than outward at the world.
In November 2023 families walked from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem over five days and rallied outside the prime minister’s office. On 2 September 2024, after six hostages were recovered dead, the Histadrut called a nationwide general strike. Ben Gurion airport closed.
A general strike against a wartime government, over that government’s war decisions, does not happen in a country with no debate.
Standing Together
Standing Together, Omdim Beyachad in Hebrew, launched in 2015. It is a movement of Jewish and Arab citizens of Israel organising as one body, with thousands of dues paying members and branches in towns and universities.
Its existence answers a specific claim: that Jews and Arabs inside Israel neither do nor can organise together. They do, they are named, and the website is public.
The organisations, and the trap inside them
Now the part where readers get ambushed. Handle it before somebody handles it for you.
The Association for Civil Rights in Israel dates from 1972. B’Tselem was founded in 1989. Breaking the Silence was set up in 2004 by veterans of the Israeli army. Yesh Din began in 2005. All four are Israeli, registered in Israel, staffed by Israelis, investigating their own state.
Here is the trap. Several of them have published conclusions this site argues against elsewhere. B’Tselem called Israel an apartheid regime in January 2021. In July 2025, with Physicians for Human Rights Israel, it published a report concluding that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. Yesh Din’s monitoring finds 93.6% of investigations into ideologically motivated offences against Palestinians closing with no indictment.
Cite B’Tselem as proof of a free society without knowing that. Somebody produces the genocide report and you look either dishonest or unread.
So say both halves yourself, in one breath. The existence of these organisations is evidence about the country. Their conclusions are contested, including by us, and those arguments are had on other pages.
“I’ll go further than you. The report you’re quoting was written by Israelis, in Israel, and they published it there and went to work the next morning. I don’t accept their conclusion and I’ll tell you why. But ask yourself where you’d file a report like that in Damascus.”
Arab citizens are in the room, not outside it
Arab parties have held Knesset seats since the first Knesset in 1949.
In 2001 Salah Tarif became the first non-Jewish cabinet minister. In 2007 Raleb Majadle became the first Muslim minister, holding science, culture and sport. In 2021 Issawi Frej served as minister of regional cooperation.
The one to memorise is June 2021. Ra’am, an Islamist party led by Mansour Abbas, signed a coalition agreement and entered the government sworn in on 13 June. That was the first independent Arab party in an Israeli governing coalition, and it held the balance of power.
Soldiers prosecuted, buildings demolished
Two cases against the state, both carried out.
In January 2017 a military court convicted Sergeant Elor Azaria of manslaughter for shooting a wounded Palestinian attacker in Hebron. He was sentenced to 18 months in military prison. Israeli opinion was loudly split and the court convicted anyway.
In June 2004 the Supreme Court decided the Beit Sourik case. It struck down the planned route of thirty of the forty kilometres of barrier before it, on the ground of disproportionate harm to Palestinian villagers. The state redrew the route. In 2014 the same court ordered the outpost of Amona demolished as built on private Palestinian land, and in February 2017 the police removed the residents.
Where this backfires
Do not oversell it as an answer to the substance. Somebody can accept every word above and still argue the occupation is wrong. Internal dissent shows a country argues. It does not settle what the argument is about.
Two more places this goes wrong. Present it as “look how decent we are” and you have handed over a brochure. Use these organisations as character references while attacking them elsewhere and somebody will notice, so pick one position and hold it.
There is a fair objection worth conceding out loud. Most of the 2023 marchers were Jewish Israelis defending Jewish Israeli democratic rights. Palestinians in the West Bank do not vote for the government those marches were aimed at. That is true, and it is not what this page claims. This page claims Israelis argue in public, fiercely, and win.
Three lines to have ready
“Thirty nine consecutive weekends of protest against the prime minister. Does that sound like the country you just described?”
“Ten thousand reservists refused to volunteer. Their own soldiers, against their own government, in public, with their names on it.”
“Everything you know about this, you learned from Israelis. Ask yourself why the movement that says it cares about Palestinians never told you their names.”
Your next move
With four minutes before a conversation, learn the three lines above and nothing else.
With an evening, do this. Open the websites of Standing Together, B’Tselem, Yesh Din and the Hostages and Missing Families Forum. Read one page on each. Write one sentence per organisation in your own words: what it is, and one thing it has published that you disagree with.
Then the plan. If a conversation turns to whether criticising Israel is allowed, then I will name two Israeli organisations, say what they published, and say where I part company with them.

The arguments this one sits next toIsrael is an apartheid state
Salim Joubran, an Arab justice of Israel's Supreme Court, chaired the committee that supervised Israel's national elections from 2013 to 2015. Apartheid was a system for keeping the ballot box away from a man like him, not for putting him in charge of it.
26 sourcesJews here should answer for what Israel does
No British Catholic is asked to account for Italy, and nobody has ever thought to. The demand gets made of Jews, about one state, and the answer is checked. That makes it a test of Jews rather than a question about Israel.
4 sourcesZionism is a political position, not an identity. Nobody is entitled to a platform, and we are allowed to decide who is in our space.
In March 2025, 88 per cent of American Jews said Israel has a right to exist as a Jewish and democratic state. Bar that belief and you have emptied the room of Jews. Nobody gets to do that and then call the result a coincidence.

In October 2020 the Equality and Human Rights Commission ruled that the Labour Party had unlawfully harassed Jews. Among the conduct it named was the claim that antisemitism complaints were smears. You have just made that claim.
